PSHE

PSHE at Chellaston Infant School

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education gives pupils the knowledge, skills, and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe and to prepare them for life and work in modern Britain.

It is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy and safe whilst preparing them for life and work in modern Britain. PSHE education helps children to achieve their academic potential and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life.

From September, 2020, Relationships Education and Health Education became statutory in all schools providing primary education. At Chellaston Infant  School, these elements are taught through a comprehensive programme of study which fulfils these aspects.

At Chellaston Infants, our PSHE programme of study is based on 3D PSHE, a published scheme which we have adapted and enhanced to meet the needs of our school community. We work with our link Junior School to deliver this from EYFS through to Year 6.

We teach PSHE through Categories of Knowledge.  These are:

  • Online Wellbeing
  • Economic Wellbeing
  • Emotional Wellbeing
  • Physical Wellbeing
  • Relationships

It is through these themes that Chellaston’s progression framework covers the breadth of PSHE from relationships and health, to economic wellbeing and careers, setting out content for EYFS and Key Stage 1 and preparing children for the PSHE curriculum at Chellaston Junior School.

Chellaston Infant and Junior Schools’ Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is age-appropriate, building knowledge and life skills over time in a way that prepares our children for issues they will soon face. In terms of Relationships Education, this involves learning about:

  • Different types of relationships, including friendships, family relationships, dealing with strangers;
  • How to recognise, understand and build healthy relationships, including self respect and respect for others, commitment, tolerance, boundaries and consent, how to manage conflict and also how to recognise unhealthy relationships;
  • How relationships may affect health and wellbeing including mental health;
  • Healthy relationships and safety online;
  • Physical health and healthy lifestyles.

Our PSHE curriculum is made up of a range of learning opportunities including:

  • Discrete lessons
  • Links across all subjects
  • Circle time opportunities
  • Response to topical issues
  • School visits
  • Fundraising for charities
  • Assemblies
  • Extra-curricular activities

It is PSHE education which helps pupils at Chellaston to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. Our PSHE lessons help pupils to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up.
